Common Garage Door Problems
Garage door problems can happen for many reasons, and it’s not always easy to tell what’s wrong. Below are a few common issues to help you identify the problem before requesting a quote. Some fixes may be simple, but if the issue involves springs, cables, or a door that feels unsafe, don’t force it — contact us for service.
Other Garage Door Issues
Not every garage door problem is easy to identify. If your door is noisy, crooked, stuck, moving unevenly, has damaged rollers, loose hardware, track issues, opener problems, or something just doesn’t seem right, we can help. Send us a message with a few details and photos, and we’ll help determine the best next step.
Dirty or Misaligned Photo Eyes
If your garage door starts to close then reverses, the opener lights flash, or the door only closes while you hold the wall button, the issue is often with the photo eyes. These safety sensors sit near the bottom of the door tracks and need to point directly at each other. Check for dirt, cobwebs, or anything blocking the sensor beam, and make sure the sensors have not been bumped out of alignment. A flashing, flickering, or off sensor light is usually a sign that the photo eyes are blocked or misaligned. This is something many homeowners can resolve on their own, helping avoid an unnecessary service call.
Broken Spring
When a garage door spring breaks, you may hear a loud bang from the garage. The opener may struggle to lift the door, only raise it a few inches, or not lift it at all if the door has one spring. If you try lifting the door manually, it will usually feel extremely heavy. You may also see a visible gap or break in the spring, like shown here. Avoid trying to raise or lower the door and contact us for service as soon as possible.
Broken or Unwound Cable
A broken or unwound cable can cause your garage door to sit crooked, jam in the tracks, or stop moving properly. You may notice one side of the door hanging lower, loose cable near the drum, or cable hanging beside the track. If this happens, avoid running the opener, as it can make the damage worse.
